Trenchless Sewer Repair: Fix the Line, Keep the Yard

TX Hydrojet Team5 min read

For decades a failed sewer line meant one thing: a trench from your house to the street, a destroyed yard, a possible driveway demo, and a bill with a comma in it. Trenchless sewer repair changed the physics of the job. Using your existing pipe as a guide, the line is replaced or relined through one or two small access pits — landscaping, fences, sprinklers, and driveways left standing.

The Two Trenchless Methods

Pipe Bursting (Full Replacement)

A steel bursting head is pulled through your old pipe by a winch. As it advances it fractures the old pipe outward into the surrounding soil, while a brand-new seamless HDPE pipe — fused beforehand into one continuous length — is drawn in behind it, occupying the exact same path. The result is a completely new pipe: new material, zero joints, full modern design life. Pipe bursting works even when the old line has offsets and moderate root damage, because the bursting head breaks through the old pipe rather than passing through it.

Cured-in-Place Pipe Lining (CIPP)

A flexible liner saturated with resin is pulled or inverted into the old pipe, inflated against the pipe wall, and cured with hot water, steam, or UV light. The result is a seamless pipe-within-a-pipe that seals cracks, joint leaks, and minor root entry points. Lining slightly reduces inner diameter but usually improves flow, because the new smooth surface beats decades of scale-roughened cast iron.

Which Method Fits Your Line

  • Badly offset, collapsed, or root-shattered sections → pipe bursting (the head breaks through damage rather than needing a clear path)
  • Cracked, leaking, but still structurally round pipe → lining (fastest, least invasive)
  • Bellies (sagged low spots) → usually neither — a belly is a geometry problem, and both methods follow the existing slope. Spot excavation or bursting that regrades the run is the honest answer
  • The deciding input is always a camera inspection: slope, damage type, diameter, and access determine eligibility — not sales preference

Cost: Trenchless vs Open Trench

Open-cut replacement in Houston commonly runs $80 to $250 per foot once excavation, shoring, and full restoration (sod, fencing, driveway section, sidewalk square) are counted. Trenchless typically prices at $60 to $150 per foot, with restoration limited to two pits a few feet square. On a 100-foot line that difference is routinely $2,000 to $10,000 — plus finishing days sooner and not living around an open trench through the job.

Two factors push Houston pricing around: access pit locations (concrete vs grass) and what the camera reveals about the old line's condition. Every legitimate trenchless quote follows a scope, never precedes one.

Why Trenchless Fits Houston Especially Well

Expansive clay soil makes trenched repairs here particularly disruptive — trench walls in Gumbo clay need to be wider and better-shored than in most cities, and restoring the yard to grade is its own project. Trenchless sidesteps nearly all of it. And because the new HDPE or lined pipe is joint-free, it removes the root-entry highways that jointed clay and hubbed cast iron provided for 50 years — in a metro whose mature trees make root intrusion the leading sewer-line killer, that upgrade is the whole ballgame.

The Process, Start to Finish

  1. Camera inspection — locate and classify every defect, verify pipe shape, slope, and diameter, and identify access pit locations
  2. Access pits — typically one at each end of the damaged run, each a few feet square
  3. Burst or line — the new pipe goes in along the existing path
  4. Re-inspection — camera verification of the finished line
  5. Reinstatement — the pits are closed and surfaced

Most residential trenchless jobs finish in one to two days. Traditional open-cut equivalents run one to two weeks including restoration.

Lifespan and What Comes After

HDPE from pipe bursting carries a 50-to-100-year design life. CIPP lining is typically warranted for 50 years. Both are root-resistant and joint-free — the failure modes that killed the old line are structurally removed, not patched. Post-repair, an occasional camera check is all the maintenance the new line asks for.

When Trenchless Is Not an Option

Honesty section, because eligibility is real:

  • Severe collapses that block the bursting head's path
  • Major bellies — both methods follow the existing slope, and lining a sag seals in the low spot
  • Insufficient slope on the existing run — the replacement would repeat the drainage flaw
  • Lines shared in ways that prevent access — rare, but real on some zero-lot properties

The camera inspection answers every one of these definitively before any money changes hands.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can every sewer line be repaired trenchlessly?

Most can. Disqualifiers — severe collapses, major bellies, insufficient slope — are all identified by the pre-quote camera inspection, so you know before committing.

How long does a lined or burst pipe last?

HDPE from pipe bursting carries a 50-to-100-year design life; CIPP lining is typically warranted for 50 years. Both are joint-free and root-resistant.

Will my yard survive the repair?

That is the point of trenchless — restoration is limited to two small access pits, a few feet square each, instead of a trench the length of the line.

How much does trenchless sewer repair cost in Houston?

Typically $60 to $150 per foot versus $80 to $250 per foot for open-cut with restoration. Final pricing follows the camera inspection.

Does insurance cover sewer line replacement?

Policies usually cover sudden accidental damage to the yard (excavation, restoration) more often than the pipe repair itself. Read your policy before assuming; the camera report supports any claim.
